Signal Flares.

Signal flares ("Signal Patronen") were used as a form of IFF ("Identification-Friend-or-Foe"). Colors-of-the-day were established beforehand, and pilots would fire the flares before landing, especially at night or in inclement weather. The flares were fired through a hole in the starboard side of the fuselage.
