"Towns at War" Index
by Ian Sadler
Introduction |
In the early 1970s, local historians decided to produce books about their local town and the events that took place between 1939 and 1945.
They drew on the memory of friends and locals who lived through that period. It was interesting that they decided to use private and original wartime photographs published by long defunct newspapers.
The focal point for model makers is in the photographs and the wealth of otherwise hidden detail contained in them.
Not only do they make interesting reading for those who were fortunately enough not live through that terrible period, but they have also captured the feel of the times for future generations to come. Hopefully they will never have to endure what our Grand parents and parent's when through.
This Index is ongoing and will not be complete until the last "Town at War" book is published.
All the books listed are in my own personal Library and can be obtained from book dealers or your own local library search system.
I do not intend to list all the interesting photographs that appear in these books, as that would be a mammoth task. In summary, though, some of the subjects covered in these books include ARP's, Factory Armaments, Home Guard, Heavy Rescue, D Day preparation, Civil Defence, War Damage, The Navy, The Army, The Airforce as based in the UK and overseas. If you are looking for types of vehicles used by any of the Emergency services these books will prove invaluable.
I dedicate this to all those who lived and worked and fought for the freedom with such a heavy price to pay.
I will only list the Title, Author, Date published, ISBN no if known, it is up to you the reader to track them down, good luck and happy researching and modelling.
